Golan Levin: interactive artifacts and experiences

I recently watched a TED talk by Golan Levin on how he combines engineering and art to create really innovative interactive experiences.

One example of his work take’s a brilliant recital of Kurt Schwitters’s Ursonate by Jaap Blonk and translates the words into on-screen text in real time. It’s immensely fun to watch a grown man recite a highly patterned nonsense poem and watch the words fly out as he speaks. I don’t know why it’s so captivating, but it is. Click here to watch parts of the recital. The fact that the text is synced to the voice using a real-time syllable detector is really impressive.

Also, check out his Double-Taker (Snout) installation. It uses gesture tracking to move a large eye on top of a building in response to people as they walk towards the art gallery. It’s a whimsical mix of robotics and pure art.
